Microsoft and PC-producers shooting themselves
in the foot
In the first three months of 2013 76.3 million
PC’s were sold worldwide, a year earlier that number was still to 886 million
units. IDC is calling the trend “alarming” and points towards the heavy
competition small PC’s (netbooks) are getting from smartphones and tablets.
Also was Microsoft’s new operating system Windows 8 a commercial disappointment, while on the side of producers HP and Dell
had no resources for innovation, with both companies going through a
reorganisation. HP saw its sales drop by 23%, Dell by 10.9%; number four, Acer, even lost 31.3%.
Only Lenovo stands ground
The only one of the big producers to do well, was Lenovo: the Chinese PC manufacturer faired pretty well in the US and
especially on its home market, where a lot of consumers are only now buying
their first PC.
Because of this Lenovo is right on the tail of
market leader HP: the American brand sold 11.997 million PC’s in the first
quarter, the Chinese sold 11.7 million devices, giving them a worldwide
market share of 15.7% and 15.3%.
