Smartwatch sales have more than tripled in the first quarter of 2016, compared to a year ago: that boils down to more than four million smartwatches in the past three months.
Apple dominates
In 2015’s first quarter, 1.3 million smartwatches were sold, a number that that has now grown to 4.2 million smartwatches in 2016, up 223 %. Increased demand in North America, Western Europe and Asia were the biggest engines behind this growth. Compared to 2015’s final quarter however, there is a 48 % drop due to the effects of the holiday season.
Apple sold 2.2 million smartwatches in the first quarter of 2016, grabbing a 52 % market share. However, in 2015’s final quarter, Apple had a 63 % market share – coming from 0% in that year’s Q1. Korean Samsung is Apple’s closest competitor in this branch, although it only has a 14 % market share here, which means it sold 600,000 smartwatches.
