81.8 million games sold
Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has divulged the numbers during a press conference on the eve of the world’s largest electronics expo, CES in Las Vegas. These 18.5 million consoles were sold in an 18-month period, which is faster than the PlayStation 2 managed back in the day. Drawback is that even these excellent results will not help avoid Sony’s fifth net loss in the past six years.
PlayStation 4 games have also sold incredibly well, the CEO said. With 81.8 million games so far and some 11 million PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony’s console is performing well above its competitors. Microsoft, for example, would have hoped to emulate these numbers with its Xbox One, but at the end of October it had ‘only’ sold 7 million consoles (just half the 13.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold in the same amount of time).
