Over the past quarter, Apple only sold half of the Apple Watch devices it sold last year in the same quarter. It also lost market share.
Entire market shrinks
Over the past quarter, IDC estimates Apple shipped 1.6 million Apple Watches, down 55 % compared to the year before when it shipped 3.6 million devices. Its market share also plummeted, from 72 to 47 %, but it is still the world’s leader when it comes to smartwatches.
Samsung sold an additional 200,000 devices compared to last year, up to 600,000 and ranks second. The total smartwatch market represents 3.6 million devices in the second quarter, down from 5.1 million last year.
It is not an unexpected drop as the Apple Watch was launched in last year’s second quarter, creating a huge rush. Nevertheless, it is the first time Apple has had to see one of its devices’ popularity fall so sharply. For example, iPhone sales grew 9 years in a row. Analysts feel a new version of the Apple Watch could reignite sales.
