Thirty traders are no longer allowed to operate on Amazon until their court case with fashion brand Louis Vuitton is still ongoing. The brand filed a lawsuit because those thirty traders sold counterfeit items.
Damage to image
Louis Vuitton wants to prevent counterfeit sales on Amazon, but also prevent these retailers from just opening another store and continuing their business. It also wants a 60 million dollar (54 million euro) compensation.
The French luxury brands says the counterfeit items on Amazon also harm its own image. Consumers will lose faith in the brand, partially because these counterfeit items perform so well in Google’s search results.
Louis Vuitton’s parent company, LVMH, is not a big fan of Amazon or any other type of web shop that has a wide range of items. “We believe that the existing business of Amazon doesn’t fit our luxury, full stop, but also doesn’t fit with our brands,” said chief financial officer Jean-Jacques Guiony on a recent conference call with investors. “If they change the business model, I don’t know, but with the existing business model, there is no way we can do business with them for the time being.”
