Opportunities in China
1.4 million tons were processed into frozen fries, while 455,000 tons were turned into products like puree, potato chips and croquettes. The union for the Belgian potato industry, Belgapom, believes there is still room for growth, particularly in Asia. China aims to produce more potatoes itself, which could be good news for the Belgian processing plants.
The union also wants to emphasize and strengthen the Belgian potato’s image abroad. It will therefore launch a campaign, targeted towards English-speaking countries, to promote “french fries” as Belgian fries.
