Based on weight
Original Unverpackt is a start-up created by two women from Berlin, who wanted to curb the excessive use of packaging. That is why everything in this supermarket is stored in containers and sold based on its weight. Customers can bring their own packaging or use the recyclable materials the store has on offer.
Selling by weight avoids food waste as customers can perfectly define how much they want from each product instead of being tied to a fixed amount in packaging.
It is not a new concept: there was an Unpackaged supermarket in England in 2007, but it had to close in 2013 as it proved unprofitable. Luzners is a similar concept in Vienna, but it caters to the ecologically aware customers more.
