Fashion brand Gucci will no longer use fur in its clothing and accessories, as CEO Marco Bizzarri promised during his Kering Award for sustainable fashion acceptance speech for the London College of Fashion.
“Socially unacceptable”
“Being socially responsible is one of Gucci’s core values and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals”, the Italian said. Gucci also says it “hopes will help inspire innovation and raise awareness, changing the luxury fashion industry for the better.” The 2018 spring and summer collections will be its first 100 % fur-free collections.
Gucci made the decision after a discussion with Fur Free Alliance, an organization that unites forty animal rights organizations against the breeding of fur animals. The Humane Society of the United States and the Italian animal rights organization LAV played an important role in Gucci’s decision. Belgian animal rights organization GAIA is satisfied: “The major fashion brands have finally seen the light”, it said.
Gucci, a subsidiary of French luxury group Kering, is not the first fashion brand to denounce fur. Brands like Armani, Yoox Net-a-Porter, Hugo Boss and Stella McCartney already did so in the past.
