Dark and pale options
Everyone who visited Rome in the past summer, may have tasted it: ‘Birra Spalmabile’ or ‘beer spread’. The idea came from chocolate maker Napoleone and the Alta Quota brewery, both from the Rome area. They have created a creamy, smooth cream with chocolate paste consistency and 40 % beer.
The ‘beer chocolate spread’ will hit the market in two versions, one with the darker Omid beer and the paler Greta beer from the brewery. The spread is apparently ideal as pre-dinner food (toast or with cheese), as cake or pie stuffing or as pancake garnish.
Not yet in Belgium
The beer spread is available in Italian specialty stores and is exported to Germany and Great Britain, at the Selfridges supermarket chain for example. It has been considered a success over there, as it is already “temporarily out of stock”. Similar situations have arisen at specialty web shops.
It is unclear if and when the spread will come to Belgium and which supermarkets will add it to their product range, but knowing how Belgians love beer and chocolate…
