Further
deployment if successful
This
method will at first be implemented at Rewe’s own 1600 German stores,
while franchisers have the choice of joining in. “We will use this
method in all Rewe-stores from November onwards, but every
entrepreneur heading their own franchise-store can decide whether to
join”, states spokesperson Andreas Krämer.
He
maintains that participation in the innovative system will not
require any additional investment for new cash registers. “The
QR-code will be displayed on the register, which is possible through
a simple software update. Franchisers will not have to purchase a new
till.”
Customers
will be able to enjoy this service for free and if it is considered a
success, Rewe will also deploy the system to other chains of the company,
like the Penny discount stores, the Billa supermarkets (the largest
supermarket chain in Austria), the B1 hardware stores and the
ProMarkt electronics chain.
Breakthrough
in contactless payments
“Rewe
wants to be part of Germany’s most innovative supermarket chains,
not only for our array of products, but also for our service”,
states operations
manager Lionel
Souque.
Yapital CEO Nils Winkler agrees: “The
collaboration between Yapital, the creator of the project, and Rewe
is a breakthrough in contactless payments in offline retail. It is a
milestone towards ‘Everywhere Payment’, where Yapital will offer
the customer the possibility of fast, easy and safe payments”.
