40%
CO2 reduction by 2020
With
financial aid from the European Union, Unilever takes up the
challenge to scale back the number of trucks on European roads.
Distances should be reduced by 200 million kilometres – of which
2.5 million should be achieved in Belgium and 23 million in the UK.
CO2 efficiency should improve by 40% by 2020 to compensate for the
higher number of vehicles that is expected to result from future
growth.
Unilever
wants to fulfil these ambitions by optimizing its network of
transport hubs and using cutting edge technology to maximize the load
efficiency of the trucks in use.
Traffic
and environmental issues
All
these efforts stem from the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan and
should tackle environmental issues as well as traffic congestion,
Although the president of Unilever Europe, Jan Zijderveld, has an eye
for the business benefits as well: “The long-term savings will help
us become even more efficient and cost effective.”
