Lower chance
Last week, news on a new WHO report broke which stated that red and processed meat were both placed on the list of items with carcinogenic effects. Many consumers took this news to mean that meat consumption was discouraged.
“We ask people not to completely stop eating processed meat“, the WHO now says in a new statement. “We are saying that the limited consumption of process meat will lower the chances for colorectal cancer. Do not remove meat from your diet completely because it also contains important nutritional items.”
Previously, the WHO said that 50 grams of process meat per day would increase the chance for colorectal cancer by 18 %, while also discouraging the consumption of more than 500 grams of red meat per week. An 18 % increase is merely a small increase compared to other products like cigarettes, which increase the chances for cancer many times more.
