Zalando has opened a new fulfilment centre near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. This will allow same day delivery to customers in the Benelux, as well as improve access to the British and French markets.
Automated and sustainable
With this new distribution centre, Zalando is able to stock a relevant product range closer to its customers, sharply reducing average delivery times. Next day delivery will be possible for the lion’s share of orders, aiming to make same-day delivery the standard throughout the Benelux, the retailer states in a press release. No such promises are made towards customers in France and the United Kingdom, but they should also be delivered faster.
At 140,000 sqm, this is Zalando’s largest distribution centre anywhere in Europe. It is largely automated and built according to sustainable principles, including solar panels on the roof – meaning it qualifies for the BREEAM sustainability certification with the score “Very Good”. Operator of the new location will be logistics provider Ingram Micro, who hope to create 1,500 jobs here.
The new distribution centre is Zalando’s thirteenth in total, in seven European countries. Zalando’s expansion does not end here, however: the building of new centres in France, Germany and Poland is ongoing or about to start.
