Ahold Delhaize has completed its acquisition of the Romanian Profi chain. The retailer acquires 1,751 shops, doubling its presence in Romania.

As the acquisition was already approved by the Romanian competition authority last month, Ahold Delhaize was able to complete the deal quickly. The retailer will pay 1.3 billion euros for Profi Rom Food SRL to its previous owner, investment fund MidEuropa. Profi has 1,751 shops and achieved 2.7 billion euros in sales in the twelve months ending June 2024. The shops are complementary to the 977 shops that Ahold Delhaize already operates in Romania under the Mega Image brand.
The transaction should enhance the retailer’s ability to serve customers in both urban and rural areas, Ahold Delhaize said in a press release. “The acquisition of Profi reinforces our commitment to providing customers in Romania a broad and diverse range of high-quality products and services. We look forward to creating long-term value for our customers, colleagues, partners and stakeholders”, CEO Frans Muller added.
