Belgian vegans are advised to do their shopping at both Ahold Delhaize chains, a study found out. Albert Heijn offers the largest vegan selection, closely followed by Delhaize. The discounters Aldi and Lidl are on the other side of the spectrum.
Ahold Delhaize top
Albert Heijn has the widest range of meat substitutes, dairy substitutes and vegan confectionery & biscuits. Delhaize scores best for ready meals and for sauces and spreads, but the difference between the two chains is minimal.
Carrefour lands in third place, albeit at a respectable distance from the top two. Market leader Colruyt is in the middle position in all categories. Both German discounters are at the bottum, but is partly explained by the fact that they generally have a smaller range than the other supermarket chains anyway. However, the vegan range has expanded in all supermarkets in recent years, and some chains have already announced that they will increase the range even further this year.
Three organisations (Eva vzw, Bite Back and BE Vegan) have studied the vegan range of the six major Belgian supermarket chains in five cities (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Kortrijk and Hasselt) and focused on five categories: meat substitutes, dairy substitutes, confectionery & biscuits, ready meals and sauces, dips & spreads.
