Aldi is now also doing tentative tests with click&collect: at three locations in Germany, customers can collect their online orders from a container in the car park. Remarkably, the discounter is going much faster in terms of home delivery.
With restraint
At two locations near the headquarters in Mülheim, and at a supermarket in Düsseldorf, customers will be able to collect orders they have ordered via online platform Mein Aldi from 15 July.
That online platform is not new: Aldi Süd has already been testing a home delivery service under that name in Mülheim since last year. It makes 1,300 items from the full range of 1,700 products available to be delivered to your home, including frozen foods. Deliveries are made by electric vans from a specially equipped dark store, Lebensmittel Zeitung reports.
Still, there is more restraint about click&collect: the Aldi management is said be doubtful about the economic chances of such a pick-up service and fears that the service could affect in-store sales, Lebensmittel Zeitung continues. In contrast, competitor Rewe – which recently opened Europe’s largest ‘autonomous’ supermarket – has long had many takeaway points, so Aldi Süd feels somewhat obliged to play along. The discounter is already performing such tests on the British and Swiss market.
