Amazon has launched its online supermarket Amazon Fresh in Germany, but so far it only ships to Berlin and Potsdam. However, the goal is to expand to a nationwide delivery service in the future.
85,000 items
There had been rumours for weeks about when Amazon Fresh would launch in Germany and the online giant now confirmed it launched in parts of Berlin and Potsdam. At launch, Amazon Fresh will have 85,000 items, instantly making it larger than an average supermarket.
Amazon is also collaborating with several local enterprises, like coffee manufacturer Sagers and chocolate manufacturer Rausch. Supermarket chain Tegut helps sell its private labels, similarly as to how both companies joined forces for Amazon Pantry in Germany. It was already revealed that Amazon would not handle deliveries, but that DHL will do so, as Amazon Fresh’ exclusive logistical partner in Germany.
Over the next few months, the service will expand based on consumer interest. Munich is a likely destination, considering that Amazon has a logistics center there and local Prime subscribers already have the option to order from a minor selection of fresh food.
