Most expensive purchase ever
According to American Forbes, the acquisition would be below 2 billion euro, but that would still make it Amazon’s most expensive acquisition, but both Amazon and Swiss Compagnie Financière Richemont (the current owner of Net-a-Porter) have refused to comment on the matter.
Amazon has been on the lookout for a successful entry into the luxury market for quite a while: in 2006; it purchased fashion website Shopbop, which focused on brand clothing and in 2012, it announced its intentions to invest into luxury brands. Despite its best efforts, customers still consider “fast delivery” and “low prices” to be Amazon’s main features.
Net-a-Porter, founded in 2000, managed a 23 % turnover increase to 770 million euro in its past fiscal year. Despite this growth, the company still had a 20 million euro net loss, although its losses have shrunk compared to the year before.
