Belgian viticulture had to deal with weak weather conditions for the second year in a row. Nevertheless, the industry has performed well, with a 12 % production increase and a growing number of growers.
Doubled in five years’ time
No Belgian viticulture records were broken: with 845,078 liters, 2017 was not able to topple 2015, when production levels exceeded 1 million liters. There was a frost in April for the second year in a row, which impacted production levels. There was still growth however: Belgian vinyards produced an additional 12 % of wine, a 92,000 liter increase.
“Our wine production has doubled in five years’ time”, Minister Kris Peeters told De Standaard. “Our wine quality is also improving, which is clearly visible in the increased number of wines that are protected because of their heritage or location.”
