Belgian brewery Brouwerij Haacht has acquired Canadian microbrewery Microbrasserie de l’Île d’Orléans for an undisclosed fee. Its goal is to launch its Belgian beers (including Primus and Tongerlo) in Canada.
Double annual production
Brouwerij Haacht’s beers are currently available in the Netherlands, France and Belgium, but with this acquisition, the brewery hopes to expand its reach into North America. “We have tried to exporting to North America through importers“, CEO Frédéric van der Kelen told Belgian newspaper De Tijd. “But then you are only one of thousands in someone’s portfolio, which did not work out”.
Microbrasserie de l’Île d’Orléans currently has a 3,000 hectoliter annual beer production, but this needs to double as soon as possible, while the brewery will also be modernized. However, there are no plans to bring Canadian beers to Belgium for the moment.
