On Thursday morning, the strikers at the distribution centre of Kuehne+Nagel and Supertransport will resume work. The distribution centre is facing the threat of closure. Consequently, Carrefour stores can now be resupplied from Nivelles.
Supply problems behind us?
After a meeting on Wednesday morning, the distribution centre Logistics Nivelles’ employees decided to resume work on Thursday. Also, the transport company Supertransport agreed to end the strike. As a result, Carrefour’s stores – the only customer of the distribution centre – can be resupplied.
Last week, a strike broke out after Kuehne+Nagel, Carrefour’s logistics subcontractor, announced that it wanted to close the site, entailing a collective dismissal of all 549 staff members. Due to the blocking of the distribution centre and a solidarity strike by the transport company Supertransport, many Carrefour stores could not be supplied, resulting in empty shelves.
The decision of Kuehne+Nagel caused strong reactions. Willy Borsus, minister of economy of Wallonia, turned it into a regional issue – with Belgium being divided into three communities – by pointing out that after the closure in Nivelles, Carrefour would have no logistic centres left in Wallonia.
