It seems French supermarket chain Carrefour intends to roll out its biological store formula abroad. The company has just opened its first Spanish Carrefour Bio store in Madrid, with Barcelona to follow suit soon.
Enormous potential
The 140 sqm store located on the Calle Velarde features 1,800 Carrefour Bio products and other biological items, ecological care and maintenance items, including its Carrefour Eco Planet private label. Vegan and gluten-free products are also available, a range of “on the go” sandwiches and drinks and a grain, legume and nut (quinoa, oatmeal, couscous, …) division.
With a bio product range in its hypermarkets and supermarkets and now a bio-focused store network, Carrefour hopes to democratize bio food and to reach more customers. According to Carrefour Spain’s director of private labels, the bio store formula’s Spanish potential is enormous. Spanish bio food turnover grew more than 24 % to 1.5 billion euro in 2015. An average Spanish consumer spends 32 euro on bio food every year.
Over the past few years, Carrefour France already opened about fifteen biological specialty stores, but the goal is to reach fourty by the end of 2018. Spain is the first country to welcome Carrefour Bio stores, aside from France itself. It will definitely open other Carrefour Bio Stores there, with a second store in Madrid and a first in Barcelona already planned.
