Carrefour is launching a “surprise trolley” promotion in its Belgian hypermarkets, where consumers can buy a shopping trolley with a secret content at a third of its actual value. The inspiration comes from France.
Advantageous surprise
The shopping trolley is filled with non-food products, from decoration to small electronics. However, the contents remain hidden: it is a surprise purchase, but an advantageous one. Customers pay just a third of the actual value, so 50 euros for products with a real value of 150 euros, for example.
Two hypermarkets have already tested the concept: in Mons, the available trolleys were sold out after only 15 minutes, in Kuringen it took half an hour. Now Carrefour is expanding the promotion to other hypermarkets, which can decide for itself whether to participate and with what offer. Hypermarkets in Boncelles, Oostakker, Schoten and Sint-Eloois-Vijve have already committed. Each will offer only a limited number of trolleys and consumers should reserve their trolley in advance: the promotion is first come, first served.
