Carrefour Italy has confirmed to unions that it will close 106 of its own stores. 769 people would lose their jobs. The retailer hopes to return to profitability with the restructuring.
Declining sales
The newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that 82 Carrefour Express and 24 Carrefour Market stores will be closed. Currently, the supermarket chain operates these storess under its own management. The Lombardy region would be hardest hit by the restructuring, with around 300 job losses.
According to the retailer, structural measures are required as sales and customer numbers continue to decline. The supermarket chain hopes to break even again in 2022. In October, reports surfaced about Carrefour’s plan to sell 106 supermarkets and mini markets to local entrepreneurs in the course of 2022.
Redundancy plan
Carrefour Italy has given assurances to the unions that the redundancy plan will be carried out on an exclusively voluntary basis. According to the retailer, the recovery plan “demonstrates the company’s desire to stay in Italy and continue to invest, with the aim of returning to profitability and sustained and sustainable growth”.
Carrefour operates 1450 stores in Italy. The supermarket chain employs more than 16,000 people there.
