Carrefour rolls out discount formula Supeco in Italy

icon
Food19 July, 2017

The Carrefour group just opened its first full-blown Supeco store in Italy. The soft discount formula targets both families and professional customers.

Wholesale packaging

Originally a Spanish store formula (short for “supermercado economico”), Carrefour has also trialed the mixture between a discount and cash & carry store in Romania. The very first Italian Supeco opened its doors in Novara, near Milan, in January, but that one was only an addition to a Docks Market cash & carry store. Back then, it was only a 250 sqm store trial.

Its new store, in Trofarello near Turin, is an independent 1,500 sqm store with 6,300 products, spread across 4,500 dry food items, drinks and non-food. Discount brands represent about half of the food product range, but it also has name brands, mostly in wholesale packages meant for the hospitality industry. The formula seems to target both families and companies. On top of all that, the store also sells about 1,800 fresh food items, including fruit, vegetables, meat and bakery items…

In Trofarello, Supeco replaced a Carrefour hypermarket which closed earlier this year. The next store will open later this year in Borgomanero, once again at the location of a former Carrefour hypermarket.

Blockades at Lidl due to “unbearable” workload

Lidl employees are blocking the discounter’s five Belgian depots due to the workload, which they call “unbearable”. As a result, the supplying of the stores has been completely shut down. The unions are demanding a concrete plan to improve the situation, otherwise strikes may follow in the stores themselves.
