French supermarket chain Casino launched a pilot project in Saint-Etienne: several stores will use special trams with no passengers to deliver orders.
Recylced older tram
The trial will run for three days in June and three days in July and will feature a remodeled older tram, fit for product transport. Several other changes, to facilitate transport, were carried out: pallets on wheels to empty the tram within two minutes once it has reached its destination.
During the trial, two of Casino Shop’s stores in the heart of Saint-Etienne were stocked for two days straight with this tram. It is a collaboration with TramFret, a company that is working on a system to deliver shipments by tram.
It is not the first time these method of transportation has been trialed: TramFret already delivered shipments in Paris back in 2011, tests that were closely examined by Carrefour and Casino.
