Deliveroo opens hightech restaurant in Singapore

Food18 March, 2019

Even a modern, disruptive company like Deliveroo has to find new sources of revenue: the meal delivery company has opened a high-tech restaurant in Singapore that lets people order meals from seven operators, and features a little Belgian gem as well.

Cater for employees

The British meal delivery service is testing a service in which workers can come to a special Deliveroo restaurant called Food Market and have a dining experience with a modern twist. Siddharth Shanker, general manager at Deliveroo Singapore, told a local website that the idea was “sparked by the demind for dine-in“. With forty seats, this is Deliveroo’s “first proper large-scale dining area”.

Deliveroo’s restaurant has 43 sqm of floor space and lets its customers choose from eleven food concepts, featuring Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Greek and Western dishes. Additionally, there is a cafe serving hot drinks and snacks. Belgium’s culinary tradition has a remarkable presence, with craft brewer Brussels Beer Proect.

Ordering in the restaurant is modelled on the Deliveroo app and happens without human interaction: customers can order on one of five screens, pay cashless and then follow their status on a giant screen. When the meal is ready (typically after eight minutes, Deliveroo says), customers collect it from one of twelve cubbies. As the target audience is working people, the restaurant is only open during lunch and dinner hours.
