A supermarket for excess food has opened in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The store, called Wefood, offers 30 to 50 % discounts for all of its products.
Positive project
Wefood is a Folkekirkens Nødhjælp initiative, an ngo, geared towards everyone. It is not limited to people with a low income, but also people who pay attention to environmental issues. “A lot of people consider this to be a positive and politically correct way to tackle the food excess issue”, Per Bjerre said. He works for the ngo involved.
Volunteers are responsible for Wefood’s daily operations and proceeds to other Folkekirkens Nødhjælp projects, as it strives to fight hunger in developing countries.
Product range is assured
There should plenty of items available for the store, as Denmark still has about 700,000 tons of excess food every year, even after it already managed to lower the sum 25 % over the past 5 years. Wefood collaborates with the Danish department store chain Fotex and citrus fruit and vegetable importers.
It also has sufficient financial backing, as it launched with a 1 million krona cash reserve (134,000 euro), all acquired through crowd funding.
