Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo records strong growth in 2020

Jumbo had a strong year and saw its turnover increase by some 15%. The Dutch retailer also announces a collaboration with catering group Vermaat for the operation of 44 La Place restaurants.

Jumbo flourishes, La Place suffers

Jumbo Group Holding achieved a total turnover of 9.73 billion eurp in 2020. The turnover from the supermarket activities increased by 15% to 9.68 billion euro. The La Place restaurants, on the other hand, had a very difficult year due to the corona crisis: turnover remained at 50 million euro (2019: 165 million euro) due to the compulsory closures.

In 2020, Jumbo opened 15 new stores in the Netherlands (10) and Belgium (5). The chain now has 687 stores in both countries. Apart from this, the existing stores also performed very well: organic revenue growth amounted to 11%. In the Netherlands, Jumbo currently has more than 21.5% of the market. The supermarket chain wants to continue to open new stores in 2021. In the Netherlands, these are mainly city shops; in Belgium, ten new supermarkets are planned.

Partly as a result of corona, online turnover grew by more than 50% last year to oven de 500 million euros. Jumbo will therefore continue to expand its capacity. Ten delivery hubs will be added and soon the retailer will also open its third e-fulfilment centre in Bleiswijk, from where the logistical handling of web orders will take place.

Partial takeover

In the margin of the figures, Jumbo announced a new partnership. The company wants to further develop the La Place concept in cooperation with catering specialist Vermaat Groep. The agreement in principle stipulates that Jumbo will remain the owner of the La Place brand, six of its own restaurants, four train station locations and the (inter)national franchise relationships. Vermaat, for its part, will take over the employees, assets and operation of the remaining 44 Dutch La Place restaurants.
