Customers of German supermarket chain Edeka can now pick up their online orders from a cooled package machine, at any time, day or night.
Three temperature zones
In the parking lot of the E-Center supermarket in Gaimersheim (Bavaria), shoppers will spot a giant container to pick up their online orders, even when the store is closed. Customers that order on www.edeka-sb.de can choose when they want to pick up the order, ranging from 10h-14h, 15h-19h and 20h-9h. They will then receive a confirmation email with their order number and QR access code. Depending on the size of the order, one or more shelves will be reserved. The service costs 3 euro per order, but is free for all orders that surpass 20 euro.
The unmanned pick-up formula was developed by German company emmasbox, which also has pilot programs running on the Munich airport and two Unimarkt supermarkets in Austria.
