Taller, heavier and broader
Everyone knows what it is like to fit into a t-shirt marked ‘medium’, while you have to wear a ‘large’ in the next store and even a ‘small’ in the third store. It is exactly these differences that Europe wants to eliminate and in order to do that, it wants to create a uniform system for everyone in Europe.
Several measurement campaigns were carried out in different countries already, in order to get to a standardized norm. The move is none too soon as a lot of sizes are still based on old measurements, while humans are on average taller, larger and broader.
New code
“The waistline grew, both with men and women, several sizes”, researcher Joris Cools from the Hogeschool Gent told Belgian newspaper De Morgen: “That is an important fact to keep in mind when designing pants or skirts, because the waist-hip ratio has to fit.”
The dominant female shape has changed, which means they frequently run into problems in finding the right size. That is why an additional code might be added, so that customers have an overview of the general size, breast size, waistline, hip circumference and body shape.
