The European Parliament has approved a new food program, which includes yearly investments of 250 million euro to encourage children to eat more vegetables, fruit and drink milk at school. This should help tackle child obesity.
Also good for local farmers
The new investments include 150 million to distribute fruit and vegetables in schools and another 100 million euro to distribute milk, starting in 2017. Local produce, biological agriculture, sustainable food production and food waste also have to receive focus. The new program is good news for local milk suppliers and fruit growers, who are suffering from the Russian boycott – says Belgian news website De Redactie.
As an increasing number of European children are obese, it was time for a new plan of attack: one out of 3 European children is currently obese.
