Disprove prejudices
A report on Belgian television
showed Muslim women are not less fashionable than other women: they are also
inspired by fashion blogs and magazines with tips on fashion, accessories and
shoes.
Because of these Muslim fashion aids, young
Muslim girls finally have sources of inspiration that allow them to dress in a
way that lets them obey their faith, but still indulge in their fashion needs.
Birthplace London
In London Muslim fashionistas are on equal foot
with other British hipsters: a true fashion market for Muslim women has emerged
in the British capital. Barjis Chohan, a British designer of Muslim fashion and
inspiration for a new generation of designers, launched her own haute couture
label two years ago, proving to be successful from Dubai to Paris.
Her collection exhumes modesty, class and
femininity and steers clear of everything that is to sexy or too provocative:
the rules state that under no circumstances the attention of men should be
drawn. Fun colours and distinct buttons however are no
problem at all and they give women the opportunity to give their outfit that
personal touch. Barjis Chohan says fashion should be fun.
Big fashion labels such as Dior and Gucci
already have collections designed for Muslim women. Large commercial chains
such as H&M and Primark have also discovered this new market, but for now
they are offering a limited and discrete assortment.
