During the Marrakesh climate summit, a coalition of major food manufacturers once again pledged its support for the Paris Agreement, promising to contribute to its goals. Among them are industry leaders like Danone, Unilever, Mars and Kellogg.
“Clock is ticking”
The food manufacturers (also including Ben & Jerry’s, Clif Bar, Fetzer Vineyards, General Mills, New Belgium Brewing Company and Stonyfield) stated that they want to contribute to fighting climate change, backed by the consumer and governments: “The clock is ticking and it is time to make real and lasting changes to how we do business. As some of the world’s largest food companies, we have the scale to make a difference. We will do our part and we ask that governments and civil society continue to work with us in achieving both food and climate security.”
In their latest appeal, they explicitly refer to the agricultural impact, as these companies feel it would negate every other industry’s improvements if the agricultural industry could not curb its own greenhouse gas emissions.
The outcome of this latest climate summit is that the Paris Agreement will be implemented at a hurried pace, before the end of December 2018.
