Godiva has reached a settlement of 15 million dollars (12.9 million euros) with US consumers. They assumed they were buying Belgian chocolates.
Slogan
The chocolate manufacturer’s slogan “Belgium 1926” is the reason for the compensation, writes Belgian newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen. American consumers would have been prepared to pay a higher price for the chocolates because they assumed they were actually produced in Belgium. In reality, however, the production process takes place in Pennsylvania: the slogan only refers to Godiva being founded in Belgium.
The praline producer is now prepared to pay a settlement of 15 million dollars to the ‘victims’. It concerns everyone who bought Godiva chocolate in the United States after 31 January 2015. The arrangement still requires the approval of a judge.
