Clear signal
According to Canadian NGO Canopy, some 70 million trees are cut down every year to produce textile and that number would normally double the next 20 years, which is why Canopy launched the Fashion Loved by Forest campaign. It unites Canadians who want to ban viscose gathered in old or endangered forests to produce clothes.
H&M and Inditex are not the only ones who have signed the treaty, as another 17 brands (including Quicksilver) have signed as well. With large members like H&M and Inditex, Canopy hopes it gives out a clear signal to the tree-cutting industry. H&M has indicated it wants to ban all problematic viscose out of its production by 2017.
