The Birkin bag is one of the most famous and coveted bags in the world, sold for sums between 5,000 and 10,000 euro. Despite the price, there are lengthy waiting lists for the hand bag, with waiting periods up to several years.
Jane Birkin now refuses to attach her name to the bag, after PETA had released footage showing the abysmal treatment of alligators bred at Hermès’ farms. The Birkin bag is made from alligator skin.
“Now that I have been shown the cruel slaughter of alligators to create the Hermès bags carrying my name, I have asked the Hermès Group to change its name until they can prove the production process adheres to internationally established rules“, she said.
The company has already issued a statement, saying it will thoroughly investigate that particular farm and added that another farm is used for the production of the Birkin bag. It remains to be seen whether that explanation will suffice for Jane Birkin…
