JDE Peet’s boycotts Edeka and Aldi

Food17 January, 2025

German retail powerhouses Aldi and Edeka join Belgian Colruyt and Dutch Jumbo in the list of chains that have (had) to go without JDE Peet’s coffees. The coffee processor has halted deliveries to the German supermarket chains, because they refuse to go along with its price increases.

Prices rising much faster

A lot of coffee products from brands like Jacobs, Senseo and Tassimo are missing from Edeka stores, German trade magazine Lebensmittel Zeitung reports. The manufacturer is said to have stopped deliveries itself, as the German supermarket group does not want to agree to the requested price hikes. JDE Peet’s itself says the talks are “constructive”.

The same kind of constructive talks have resulted in empty coffee shelves at discounter Aldi Nord where Jacobs products used to be. Coffee prices rose sharply last year, with another spike in November: coffee is almost 75 % more expensive today than it was in January 2024, LZ has calculated, but private label producers are raising their prices much less. This already resulted in a delisting at Belgian Colruyt last month, with Jacqmotte and Douwe Egberts references temporarily disappearing from the shelves.

In the Netherlands, Jumbo is the chain that is currently at loggerheads with JDE Peet’s and is not supplied any more – with the exception of a few items. This should come as no surprise, as Jumbo and Edeka are both members of buying alliance Everest. As such, they do their negotiating with the manufacturer together. Other Everest members are Picnic, Auchan and Intermarché, so boycotts may follow there too.

The name Sequoia is disappearing from the Belgian retail landscape: the organic stores are gradually being transformed into the Färm format. That is no big surprise, as both chains belong to the same group.
