Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has announced where and when it will open its first new Belgian store of the year. Boom, near Antwerp, will get its new supermarket on Wednesday 22 January.
Delayed opening
The store, in the town centre, will be operated by entrepreneur Mehmet Öztürk, who also runs Jumbo’s supermarket in neighbouring Niel. The store was supposed to open its doors last September, but that was delayed as the new construction project it is part of has also been delayed.
Residents of the neighbourhood have been looking forward to getting a new supermarket since the closure of the Alvo, just down the road, in early 2022. That shop was taken over by Jumbo, along with three other Alvo branches: the shops in Baasrode (Dendermonde), Niel and Rumst quickly reopened, but the store in Boom closed permanently pending the new construction. The only other supermarket in the district, a branch of Russian discounter MyPrice, has also just closed its doors.
Last year, Jumbo opened four shops in Belgium, raising its total to 37. This year, the retailer hopes to be able to exceed that number, but it does not want to commit to a concrete figure.
