German supermarket chain Lidl expects to generate a 70 billion euro turnover in its current fiscal year, which ends in February 2017. With a result like that, Lidl would beat Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord’s combined turnover.
Expansion of online sales
Discount chain Aldi’s turnover is not revealed publicly, but is estimated to be about 65 billion euro: slightly below Lidl’s turnover, with the gap set to rise over the next few years.
Lidl has plans to open its first stores in Serbia and the United States in 2018, two markets where Aldi is present already. It wil also keep expanding its web shop, after it opened a local version for Belgium this year and even experimented with online fresh food sales in Germany. Lidl, just like Aldi, is also considering a Chinese version of its web shop.
Lidl is part of the Schwarz Gruppe, which also owns hypermarket chain Kaufland. Put together, they generate a 90 billion euro turnover.
