Following their success in the Netherlands, Lidl is now also selling Kipster‘s climate-neutral eggs in Belgium. It proved impossible to get Belgian producers on board, the discounter says.
“Get the market moving”
Kipster has been called “the most animal- and environment-friendly chicken farm in the world”, letting the animals free to roam indoors or outdoors and feeding them leftovers from the food industry. “By the way, all the hens on our farm are white and lay white eggs. These are better for the environment than hens that lay brown eggs, because they need much less feed”, co-founder Ruud Zanders states.
The climate-neutral eggs have been a sales success at Lidl in the Netherlands for years, and now the retailer wants to introduce them to Belgian consumers as well, after unsuccessful attempts to get a similar chicken farm going in Belgium. “Although the Kipster concept responds to the government’s demand for more sustainable farming, it has not succeeded in convincing farmers or finding suitable locations. Through this offer, we hope to help get the egg production market in Belgium moving and redesign it in a sustainable way”, spokesperson Isabelle Colbrandt explained.
Kipster eggs are no more expensive than organic eggs at Lidl. The packaging is completely biodegradable and can be disposed of with the organic waste.
