Today in Portugal, Lidl has opened its very first store at a motorway service station. These, usually expensive, locations are unexplored territory for the German discounter.
Additional shopping opportunities
The new supermarket is located along the A5 motorway in Oeiras, on one of the main roads towards Lisbon. Lidl developed the store in cooperation with Portuguese motorway operator Brisa Concessão Rodoviária, ESM reports.
Recent consumer research has shown that there is a need for additional shopping facilities in the area. With the new 1,400 sqm store, the discounter is responding swiftly to that demand.
It is the first Lidl store in Europe to be opened along a motorway. The store will employ 24 people.
