Instead of buying a new bottle of detergent, Lidl customers can now just refill the old one. The German discounter is running a trial in ten Dutch supermarkets.
Reducing plastic waste
With the experiment, Lidl aims to reduce plastic consumption. For six months, customers will find refill stations for detergents and fabric softeners in the ten shops. They can fill a – specially provided – reusable container with three different types of liquid detergent or fabric softener. A smart cap helps with the dosage.
As an incentive, customers can see on the screen how much plastic they save by reusing the reusable container. They also get an incremental discount with each refill, RetailTrends reports. By 2025, the German discounter aims to reduce plastic use in its private label offer by 30 %.
