Unilever has announced its plans to close the Lipton factory in Vorst, Brussels. In the future, the group’s European tea production will be centred in Poland.
126 jobs in jeopardy
Lipton has decided to manufacture its tea in Katowice, Poland from now on. The British-Dutch concern says this will strengthen its position against competitors and will help it to adapt to the changing market circumstances, according to business paper De Tijd. None of the Unilever tea factories are currently working at full capacity, according to L’Echo.
The Belgian factory employs 126 people, all of whom are in danger of losing their jobs. Unilever says it’s “too early to speak on the number of jobs affected with any certainty before the end of the information and consultation phase”. The announcement of the closure has only marked the beginning of that phase, the company added.
