Under the #PledgeForPlanet initiative, Mars intends to accelerate its efforts in limiting the consequences of climate change. The food group is also calling on its suppliers and the general public to take action.
Paris objectives
Much in the same way as Amazon announced earlier this week, Mars also wants to accelerate the fight against climate change. As part of the #PledgeForPlanet initiative, the company has committed to further reducing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its direct operations so that they meet the most ambitious objective of the Paris Agreement: to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 °C.
The commitment forms part of the ambition to use only renewable energy by 2040. Today, Mars generates more than half of its electricity from renewable sources, with this figure even rising to 100 % in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Mexico.
A need for joint action
In addition to its own efforts, Mars is also calling on all of its employees, suppliers and the general public to take action. It has asked suppliers to set scientifically-based goals and to join RE100 of The Climate Group, with the aim of creating a future in which renewable energy is key.
Mars has also said that ordinary citizens can themselves help with day-to-day activities. “The new #PledgeForPlanet initiative underlines the shared responsibility of companies, governments and citizens worldwide to take action against climate change.”
