Brazil has been hit with a meat scandal, as possibly more than twenty meat manufacturers have sold rotten meat on a massive scale. They repackaged the food and shipped it to Brazilian stores and Europe.
Halt import
The companies also used (possibly carcinogenic) products to avoid detection during inspection or to avoid suspicion from customers as they repackaged rotten meat or turned it into sausages.
Brazilian police have arrested more than 300 people during raids in forty local slaughterhouses and meat processing plants. Dozens of bribed meat inspectors were also detained because they colluded with the meat manufacturers.
The meat was also exported to the European Union, but it is not clear how much actually reached the market through Rotterdam and an Italian port. The EU ambassador in Brazil, João Cravinho, says the EU could possible halt all beef and chicken imports from Brazil, the second largest beef manufacturer in the world, unless the local government can assure these exports meet EU standards.
