Turkish quick delivery company Getir is said to be close to a takeover of its German rival Flink, the market leader in Germany.
Second attempt
Getir had already acquired its another German rival, Gorillas, and now wants to take Flink out of the equation as well. According to Manager Magazin, negotiations are advancing well and rumour has it that Flink CEO Oliver Merkel would become Getir’s European head. Flink confirms that there are several takeover proposals, but does not mention Getir explicitly.
The first rumours of a takeover surfaced in May 2023, but it ultimately they did not materialise. Getir then chose to restructure and withdrew from all other countries to focus on the American, British, Dutch, German and Turkish markets.
As Flink needs new funding but shareholder Rewe (known for its German supermarkets) is unwilling to provide it, Getir may have more luck this time. Like other meal delivery companies, Flink is struggling with rising costs in the face of falling demand, as consumers have fewer meals and groceries delivered after the boom during the pandemic. Flink already cut 8,000 jobs in 2022 and 2023.
