World’s largest fashion group buckles under anti-fur pressure
The Spanish fashion holding has listened to the (umpteenth) plea from the Fur Free Alliance, an international coalition of 42 animal rights movements, to halt the sale of fur clothing. Some 300 companies had already answered its call to stop selling these items, but Inditex is of an entirely different level and an important part of the puzzle. The Spanish giant is the world’s largest fashion group, with no fewer than 6,000 stores on five continents.
GAIA is the Fur Free Alliance’s Belgian representative and evidently the group is extremely pleased with Inditex’ choice. “Their decision is a powerful signal that fur is on its way out, as an increasing amount of companies turn their back on fur, which is good news for these animals. Let’s hope that other brands and companies now follow suit”, director Ann De Greef said.
Signing the treaty is a huge statement from Inditex, as it refused to remove angora last year, even after PETA footage showed how rabbits were being skinned alive in China to get the fur.
