Coca-Cola’s labour unions are not happy with the announced job cuts from last week and have threatened to strike.
Salami politics
The labour unions have filed a request to strike, which would make it possible to strike starting 6 November. However, they may do other actions at an earlier date. “We are fed up with this type of salami politics”, Marc Delvenne told VRT. He is the union representative for ACV Voeding and Services (ACV Food and Services). “Coca-Cola announces restructuring plans on a near-yearly basis and slices up the job cuts.”
The unions feel it is not normal for a company with millions in profits to regularly keep cutting jobs. It announced last week 63 positions in Belgium would disappear, spread across seven locations. In total, 79 jobs will be cut, but a number of people will be offered other jobs within the company. All across Europe, Coca-Cola will cut 600 jobs.
Coca-Cola had just recently cut jobs in Belgium, as it announced in June that it would cut 75 jobs at the plant in Anderlecht, where it second largest research and development center is based.
