Only Primark is paying
At this moment in time, no agreement
has been reached to create a fund to compensate the victims. Organizations
fighting for worker rights in this particular industry are blaming major
corporations of trying to sidestep their financial responsibility.
Primark has been the only company so
far with compensations, now announcing a third batch of payments. The
Irish company has also been working on a plan to keep paying victims in the long term.
Other brands refuse to compensate
That was not all: “Primark is calling on other brands involved in the
Rana Plaza disaster to make a
contribution by paying short-term aid to some 3,000 workers, or their
dependents, who made clothes for their labels”, the company stated in a press
release.
A large part of the 28 brands with clothes being made in the factory refuse to take responsibility: they
claim they had “no knowledge” of how their clothes were being out-sourced to the
cheap labour sources in the factory.
